First International Work Experience
My Experience Working at Disney World: A Magical Learning Journey
Working at Disney World was one of the most magical and transformative experiences of my life. It was my first job during my early years, right after my first year at university, and it left a lasting impact on me. I participated in the International College Program, a short but highly intensive three-month program. Looking back, the lessons I learned during that time have shaped the way I approach both personal and professional challenges.
A Focus on Culture and Training
One of the most remarkable aspects of working at Disney was the investment in culture and training. Out of the three-month program, an entire month—one-third of the time—was dedicated to training at Disney University and participating in parallel activities designed to help us embody Disney’s core values and principles.
In my role as a character attendant, I wasn’t just representing Disney—I was directly responsible for the magical experience of countless guests. My job was to act as the right hand of the character in the park. This meant I was in charge of ensuring the safety, organization, and smooth interaction between the character and the guests. Communication was vital as I dealt with large crowds, managing the excitement and expectations of people who traveled from all over the world just to meet their favorite characters.
I learned how to manage lines, follow strict safety and time rules, and communicate with families when the characters had to take breaks. For example, the individuals behind the characters often needed to rest or hydrate due to the intense heat or other physical demands of their roles. It was challenging but also deeply rewarding to ensure that as many fans as possible got to experience their magical moment while balancing the practical needs behind the scenes. This training reinforced the importance of communication, time management, and organization in creating a seamless experience for everyone involved.
Excellence in Every Detail
Disney’s commitment to excellence was another invaluable lesson. The brand’s goal is not just to meet expectations but to exceed them, delivering a magical experience that feels like a dream come true. Every aspect of the Disney experience, from the transportation system to the attractions, restaurants, theaters, and even communication with guests, is designed to uphold this standard.
Despite the challenges of managing massive crowds and long lines, Disney ensures that every guest feels valued and cared for. Clear communication about wait times, efficient operations, and attention to detail make a huge difference in creating an unforgettable experience. The emphasis on excellence taught me the importance of going above and beyond to deliver not just a service, but a meaningful connection with your audience.
A Commitment to Safety
Safety is a core value at Disney, and it was one of the most significant parts of my training. Every member, guest, and employee is expected to prioritize safety in all aspects of the park experience. From understanding how to walk through the park to emergency procedures and character safety protocols, Disney ensures that everyone knows the rules and rituals that keep the environment safe and enjoyable.
I spent a considerable amount of time learning these procedures, including how to help characters exit safely in case of emergency and how to navigate the park with crowds while maintaining a secure experience. These lessons highlighted the importance of preparation, discipline, and the ability to act quickly and calmly in any situation. Safety isn’t just a policy at Disney—it’s a way of life that ensures the magic continues without interruptions or risks.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, my experience at Disney World was so much more than just a job—it was a transformative learning experience. From understanding the importance of training and culture to striving for excellence in every detail and prioritizing safety, the lessons I learned there continue to shape my personal and professional journey. Working at Disney taught me how to create magical experiences for others, and for that, I will always be grateful.
